Abstract
Chapter Two examines a memorial ceremony held in 2019 for an Icelandic glacier that recently lost its status as a glacier. That ceremony uses age-old features of epideictic rhetoric even as it alters them. Building on an interview the author conducted with one of the ceremony’s organizers, the chapter renovates Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of the chronotope, which names a verbal-sensory manifestation of time and place. A set of specific chronotopes—wishes, glaciers, generations—allowed organizers and speakers at the event to exploit the temporal and generic flexibility of the epideictic genre. In this way, the ceremony shows how chronotopes help audiences vividly imagine a future in the assigned time of the present, how chronotopes, in effect, can make magnitude of ice loss more accessible to those for whom ice has no cultural weight. At the heart of the investigation is not just the fact or act of attention, central to the art of rhetoric, but of the quality of that attention—the sensory, felt dimensions of the ceremony.
Keywords: chronotopes, Mikhail Bakhtin, glaciers, epideictic rhetoric, subjunctive mood, generations, ceremony, public memory, deep time, wishes
